Allen
Brewer was born in St. Paul, MN to a family that
was already artistically prolific. A great great
granddaddy had paved the way
with Hudson River School prowess, establishing
himself as a premier portrait and landscape painter.
Out of his six sons, four went on to sprinkle
their talents throughout the U.S. and the familys
DNA.
An innate ability to re-create lifes beauty
has always been the driving force behind Allens
work, whether its with realism or a more
simple style. Brewer tends to focus on the immediate
reaction he gets when encountering the sublime.
The sublime to Allen could be a tree or
a tattered sign on University Ave. People become
simplified, colors blaze more intensely, and instances
turn into statements of larger meaning.
Obviously, Folk Art has made a sizable imprint
on Allens view of academic vs. naïve
art making, and its an aesthetic he holds
dear.
Although properly trained in realism, Allen focuses
more on the emotion of moments and strips them
down to their basic core. One
of the great things artists can take advantage
of is interpretation.
We can either take things for what they are, or
create new ways of seeing.
